The first half term back after Christmas was a busy one, in
Reception. We began our ‘Into the Woods’ theme with children creating a
selection of bears, trees and caves to decorate our classroom and create our
own woods. It was lovely hearing all about children’s holidays and celebrations
– we linked this to our work on time and talked about similarities and
differences between ourselves in Key Group.
We read the story of ‘Brown Bear,
Brown Bear’ and made our own rhyming string biscuits and books to show the
sequence of our day. Our next text was
‘Where Bear?’ about a bear looking for a new home. We had great fun making new
beds for the bear and his friends, using our measuring skills to make sure they
As the weather had got really cold, we decided we should try to help
the birds outside so made some feeders in Key Group. We all helped make the
Three Bears’ Cottage ready for our next book – ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’
and enjoyed acting out the story and taking on character roles in it. We had a
special treat of Mummy Bear’s Rice Pudding but were shocked when it vanished
and we had to use our investigation skills to find clues and make wanted
posters to try and get it back. We used our calculation skills to work out how
many bowls were left. Parents/carers came into class to share activities that
we had been doing and look at how our learning is progressing.
Lots of us had
been to Chinese New Year celebrations so we wanted to find out more about it in
school – we made a Chinese Restaurant roleplay and enjoyed looking at a display
of real artefacts from New Year. We made our own versions of artefacts, writing
instructions for these.
In PE, we learnt all about dragon dancing and practised
learning to do one, then we made up our own when we were playing, being
accompanied by children who had made up Chinese New Year Bands. We finished off
the celebration by looking at money and making lucky money envelopes and
writing our own menus for a Chinese Banquet – this was delicious!
Our last text
was ‘Biscuit Bear’ and we all enjoyed following instructions to make our own
biscuits. We used our counting skills to work out how many we had and practised
one more and one less with the amounts.
We celebrated Valentine’s with a coffee
morning, chatting with parents about children’s next steps, whilst they did
activities. Throughout the half term, we have had music sessions from ‘Musical
Minis’ and children enjoyed a theatre visit from ‘The Snow Queen’. This was an
exciting half term and we are looking forward to the next where we will be
going down in the jungle!
